Is the console for an '81 car different than that for an earlier car?

Not sure if it's like that for all 81 models, but the ones that had the computer controlled carb had no provisions for the console because the computer sat behind it.

Yes, all 1981 Firebird consoles were completely different as they had a blocked off map pocket area with a side door flap as they had the Computer Command Control module inside them. Canadian cars may have received the standard map pocket console, as they didn't require the CCC.

1980 consoles were slightly different, where they weren't molded closed, but had different brackets that were embedded into the walls for a flat block off plate for the turbo light switch and bezel.

Thats a good pic. The one that I am questioning about does not have the decorative recess at the very bottom. I was not sure if it was for a camaro.

I researched that as well, and I've come to the conclusion that in terms of ORIGINAL parts (aka, the repros are incorrect), the automatic consoles have that decorative recess while the manual trans consoles have it flush/smooth all along the console like how the repros are. Enough searching for originals on eBay is how I came to this conclusion.
