I was quoted this amount...
« on: September 11, 2026, 03:38:29 PM »
to have my TA repainted. $60,000 [sixty]This after I offered to have all trim, lighting and moldings removed by me. I thought it was joke but it was not. Work included stripping the paint fully.

That’s insane.  I know inflation is bad but that is another level.

MY TA is an original southern California car all its life. Has zero rust. I can't fathom this $60K quotation. At that price I can buy a TA that will win Best of Show award for the majority of the car shows it enters. I was thinking $8000 to $10000 for a car that needs no major body work at all.

That's a "I don't want to do it" quote....

For comparison my Lemans was about $15k but this was New Mexico 4 years ago.   Car was media blasted.

But they botched it somewhere as tiny bubbles are starting to crop up in certain areas

I had a shop tell me they would only repaint it after doing a full resto, I said the car is already restored, they didn't care.  I think the price was around 30K but you know they would always fine something.

Boomers have destroyed this hobby, along with tons of other stuff.  The "good" news is that people will start doing it themselves, which will get shops to get more realistic in pricing or put them out of business.  I can't wait till the bottom drops out of the car bubble and people are left with cars they have to take a massive loss on to move them.  Once that happens I'll have a 70 Chevelle in my garage.

Want real frustration?  Try hiring a contractor to do work at your home, it will be costly IF you can get them to show up!

Dave, I resemble that remark  I have been a self employed contractor for 45+ years. Not enough time in the week to get all of my work done. I do show up eventually. I wish I could say I was getting rich, but just eaking a living. As far as pricing I cant go to Lowes and walk out with less than a $200 bill and that amount of stuff will fit in a small bag. So the high cost of repair doesnt all go into my pocket.
But I digress,
60k to paint a trans am is silly. I will do the job for $55k :-D Seriously, I painted my 77 (black) with paint I bought at summit for less than 3k all in. Its not the best paint job but also far from the worse I have seen. I did my 79 (silver) for probably less than 3k because I had tools I bought when I painted the 77. The price of paint is stupid now. The labor cost is even worse. But everyone wants to buy a new 100k pickup truck so whatya expect?

I agree on contractors costs, I get it.  We had a guy just stop showing up for who knows why.  I would rater them just say upfront they don't want to do it, but people are weird that way.

It’s either paint this car or buy one that’s completely restored and save some money…also
You could buy a portable inflatable paint booth and all the toys that go with it for a lot less..
I took auto body in high school when we had to worry about orange peel or dry spots - today’s painting methods are a lot easier.
My uncle is just finishing up his late 30’s ford coupe and painted it in his one stall garage , maybe he had a little more elbow grease into clear coat buffing but saved a lot of money and the car looks great. I know keeping metallics stirred up while spraying makes a difference but even more new vehicles I’ve seen are just a plain color which I would think are easier to spray
