Oil consumption
« on: March 30, 2025, 08:27:39 AM »
Hope everyone is doing well and the weather improves to get the cars out. I did an oil change this weekend and found the engine was about 1 1/2 qts. low. I probably put about 500 miles on it since the last top off. The 403 engine is a rebuild with about 7k on it now but built pretty good. I hear from some the oil consumption is normal.  I even put in a catch can due to the high pressure pump blasting oil into the PCV. Just find it odd, no smoke, sparkplugs are perfect even the breather is clean and no smoke from the crankcase.  Just wondering what would be normal.

My 400 burns a bit of oil as well. No too much but I do keep an eye on it. Motor probably has less than 5k on the rebuild.

Try one of these M/E Wagner adjustable PCV valves.  They do work especially on no-stock engines. Over the phone tech guy was very knowledgeable on non chevy motors.

Thanks for the info. I saw a previous post for the pcv valve and researched it. I was sold on it and installed it. It does catch oil and helped with better idle and throttle response. I think part of the issue is the high volume oil pump blasting oil into the baffles on the valve covers.  I am sure the consumption is nothing to worry about if there is no smoke from the tail pipes or breather.  Plugs are still spotless.

Get rid of HV oil pumps. In most instances they only fill valve covers and don't have extra capacity sump to cater for oil used, lacks the drain back rates or to end up where it needs to be. They are for guys who impress others with their Elderbrocks and Rodchesters.
Anyway, having said that, of course you can't and won't lol.
