AC Compressor oil leak?

I need some advice. My AC compressor clutch pulley seems to be leaking oil and sprays everywhere when car is running. Is there a solution can the clutch be replaced, can I send it somewhere to be rebuilt? Is this a simple fix or really involved? Thank you and advise would be greatly appreciated

it is not the clutch
it is the input shaft seal to the compressor
unless you need to keep it original
get a new compressor

I think I can get a AC Delco rebuilt compressor are they any good?

The A6 style compressor most of these cars came with have a carbon/ceramic type seal. When new 50 years ago these seals were prone to leaks. Supposedly there is a newer lip seal that will work on the A6 and is less likely to leak. I have read that frequently running the compressor every couple of weeks will reduce the likelihood the carbon ceramic type seals will leak. But that is not easy on an old classic car that may sit idle for months. I have heard many rebuilt A6 compressors are junk. Leaking was so common on these that GM built a shield to surround the clutch assembly, often used on Cadillac’s.


A common fix is is to replace the old A6 compressors with a modern replacement. They are smaller and weigh about half as much. The also use 1/3 the horsepower. Old style A6 needs 10-15 horsepower compared to modern compressors 2-5 horsepower.

Easiest way would be to still reinstall another A6, it simply fits with existing brackets as it should. There's also a couple of A6 replacements that are lighter, more efficient perhaps, but yet to see anyone who has one. If they looked original they'd be more popular with those who want the stock look too. Apart from that front weep the originals are bullet-proof.
