Seat frame swap
« on: January 03, 2022, 08:53:09 AM »
I have in my 78 TA some earlier 70's TA seats, and what I think are what we have called the "horse collar" seat bottom foam pad. They are of a hobnail type material and I really like them summer and winter. The driver seat frame has the infamous seat lean inward and back. And when you sit in it goes even farther back.  I'm sure something is broken or cracked in the lower piece. I've tried the spacer on the seat lug and even raised the back mounts off the floor a little and while that has helped and made it drivable, it's time to fix it right.

The original seat frame is still very good. So, can I just move the lower seat cover and cushion from the early style seat frame to the 78 style seat frame? Or, I guess what I'm wondering was there a lower seat frame change along the way during these years that would prevent that from working good? Thanks, DD

You will probably need to be more specific on what you have to know for sure.

You have the “Deluxe” style.

Most of the later years use a common seat frame. I used a “Standard” seat and updated to deluxe for example.

Its been a while since I've posted pics so lets see if this works. This is a pic of the old seat that I want to retain the seat bottom cushion and cover, and put it on my 78 seat frame.

My 78 seat is a standard style. I am questioning if there could have been a difference in seat frames over the 2nd gen years that would make a difference?

Im gone with the standard I may be wrong.... But I dont think the frame (at least on the later years) is any different. The deluxe seat had the hard plastic back but there is a bracket on the top of the upright frame that screws into. I am pretty sure the bracket is there for the standard seat as well. I wouldnt bet a lot of money on it but am pretty sure the frames I used came from a car with a standard int. and I used the deluxe int.

I'm not sure of the year cutoff, but most of the seat bottom frames of all years are the same, no matter deluxe/standard or Camaro or Monza or even a Grand Prix with buckets.  I wouldn't want to bet my life on the 1970 f-body seats, but from some point fairly early they just didn't change them.

Thanks guys. I am thinking they are the same as well. I'll tear into it and see. I am hoping its just the seat bottom frame that is bad.

Didn't the frames change when they started putting catalytic converters in? I seem to remember hearing they had to change the floor to accommodate. Could be wrong.

They changed the seat tracks, different height legs to match new floor.
