Crank pulley, shim in the front?

Guys,

Just wondering about the Pontiac 455 crank pulley. There's a flat plate. According to assembly drawings I found, it goes between the pulley and the bolts. Is that correct?
Can I put it between the balancer and pulley instead to make sure my pulleys are in alignment?

I just replaced the balancer and I feel like the pulleys aren't aligned. May have been like that before and I didn't notice. The balancer I got is the Powerbond one.

Ended up putting the plate on the back side to keep the pulleys lined up but I'm still curious why some motor assembly drawings show the plate going in the front.

If someone knows I would be interested in understanding why.

I’d be cautious of that and consider making a similar piece to use as a spacer and out that plate back on the front. I don’t know the theory behind it exactly but I know that plate is referred to as a reinforcement plate.

Guess I'm pulling the pulley again. Just when I got the belts all tight

it's a support plate and it belongs in front otherwise the pulley can crack around the bolts.
