72Proj.  You have quite the eccletic collection. Any movement/progress with the Corvette Summer car?

Yup, got the body on it. Finalizing the hood hinges, putting the drivetrain in and after that is time for paint. It's been a long road, but the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter!

Thats a neat period picture and period problem. Not very cool for the owner of the trans am though. Dad bought an Olds 98 around 76/77. It was an expensive car. It started rusting badly after a year. He had always bought GM up to that point, mostly Pontiacs then the Olds. He was so upset (to put it mildly) about the rust issues with that car he ended up bying european for quite a while.

My grandfather bought a 78 Cordoba new.  They lived in South Bend, IN.   I visited them in the Fall of 82 on liberty from the Navy.

Where was the Cordoba?  Rusted apart, they replaced it in 81 with a Skylark.

My uncle bought a new 72 lemans wagon. Within 2 years it started rusting out at the top of the side windows at the cargo area. He traded it on a 74 Catalina. He liked pontiacs and was a regular at the dealer. I think they gave him a good trade-in price.

In 1982 we bought my wife a new TA, in the beginning she was thrilled, as time went on not so much. We had a problem with gasoline fumes leaking into the passenger compartment. Under warranty we took it back to the dealer, they didn't find anything. We brought it back again; they replaced both engine air filters at a cost of $90.00.  The car had 6,000 miles, didn't need air filters and had fuel injection that in theory should adjust the fuel mixture to compensate for dirty filters. Several years later we had our first child and I was concerned the car would catch on fire or blow up with my daughter buckled up in the back seat. At this point the car was about 2 1/2 years old, also a line of rust where the sail panel met the roof appeared. We traded the car in on a new four door Honda Accord. After we got rid of the TA there was a recall something to do with the fuel tank venting.

In the long run we were much better off with the Accord. My wife missed the TA and thought was more fun to drive, but the Accord was much more practical. In those days it wasn't just GM, I think all American brand cars were pretty crappy. I guess we can thank the Japanese for raising the bar forcing everyone to up their game.

Rescued a 78 W72 auto, factory black on black deluxe. Needs some floor work, but is solid in the important areas. Poor thing was abandoned in a tow yard on the south shore.

Man, you always find something.  Question,  it appears to me that the front wheel flares are 79.? Maybe it's the angle...?

Nice find! I know you will make quite work of it, you always do and it amazes me.

Dang, titles in Ohio are near impossible to get once lost or not notarized. I had to junk a turbo car back in the 90s because I couldn't get a title for or it. It changed hands a bunch of times but no one had a title. Highway Patrol said to junk it and wouldn't help. I had a police buddy run the vin and it was clean but no one would help. It was a shame because it was a pretty nice car (at least I remember it that way ;)

Good Deal!  I see (not trans ams) stuff on occasion I am tempted by. I have a major project in the works once the TATA is finished so I have to pass on everything. That and the fact that Im not getting any younger
No title is a problem in MD but I think it can be done with some perseverance. I just got a no. from a guy advertising that he can title anything? When I had my brief career selling real estate I helped a couple with a new house. They had just sold their junk yard for mega bucks and were looking to retire and down size. In his yard was what looked like a perfect pace car turbo t/a, along with a black/silver spec. edition vette and a couple of nice mopars. I asked the old guy(the fellow that sold the place) about them. He said they were special cars too nice to chop up that he set aside over the years. Said they were sold with the yard. I asked the new owners about them, the short reply was 'no title, theyre not for sale'.

Man, that's tough. Yeah titles around here are pretty easy to get, plus I'm surrounded by non title states that can be a huge help in obtaining paperwork.

I was talking with Ryan the other night about historic tags for a car. I mentioned that one of my pet peeves is the abuse of the system with so many people in my area that have them on regular old hoopties to avoid emission testing and take advantage of the less than half registration fee. SO, today I decided to count. Within a 10 minute and 5 mile drive of my house first thing this morning I counted 4. They were on a rusted dodge pickup, a rusted out dodge caravan, a beat up camry and I forget what the other was. Had to make a trip to the landfill about a 20 mile round trip. To finish out the day I counted at least 14 and there may have been one or two that I missed. There seemed to be ONE legit car, a 90's era corvette out for a nice weather cruise. The rest were just regular cars being used as daily drivers.

I have antique plates on my 79, took 6 months to get, no registration in between, 175 dollars, no more fees for the life of my ownership, no inspections, no after dark use. I can live with that, worst thing was no drive it for the 6 month wait.

Why did it take so long?

In MD the process is very simple. The only requirement is that the car needs to be 20 years old. Go into the dmv and walk out with a plate. The advantages are that the fee is $50 every 2 years and no emission inspection. In fact no inspection at all for any part of the car. One does have to have it insured properly though. We do have a 50 year plate for cars that are 50 years old. I think with that one there is a one time fee only and no annual registration. They really dont advertise it and I dont think there are a lot of old car owners even aware about, as they all go for historic tags. I have seen very few of the 50 year tags. We had them on one of my motorcycles about 10 years ago, that tag was one of the first ones issued to a motorcycle in the state.

There is no good answer to that. Paperwork has to go to Harrisburg and sit until someone decides to process it. That is why I still run regular plates on my 65 k10. I drive that a lot more than the TA

I’m one of those who likes to park at the far end of a parking lot to avoid door dings. Every now and then somebody with a dented up beater still parks right next to me, sometimes too close for me to open the driver’s door. Then I wish I had something like this military grade vehicle so I could drive over their junker (no, I wouldn’t really do it).

Years ago I recall reading that these things are capable of driving right up to and over a 30” high curb. That sounds like fun!

It's an ex Air Force truck. It's street legal. The early ones that were auctioned has paperwork that said "Off Road Use Only", but now they sell with clean paperwork.

Larry, we have an Expedition that is a bit long in the tooth. It runs good but it will be replaced at some point soon. We call it the hooptie and its one of those vehicles that I dont care where we park it. Its kinda nice to have a car like that in the stable, LOL.

10 years ago today I pulled the engine and trans from the 1998 trans am in prep for it to be swapped into my 79 TA. I probably became a member just before that and how I met Ryan (be it a forum friend or a phone buddy). I was searching LS swaps on the net and his 76 trans am came up. Fast forward to today and I can drive my car anywhere, anytime without fear and always a smile as I lay rubber.

Today I'm... frustrated with people trespassing on my new home construction! Thankfully my contractor has camera's, but unless the police can catch someone in the act, there's not much that I can do...

I hate hearing stories about low life’s that steal just because they can. When I was growing up my parents owned a couple 5 + 10 cent stores, that tells you how long ago it was. I was one of 6 children. We all worked part time for nothing or close to it. Shoplifting was always a problem. Many times I was unsuccessful in apprehending the thief because they were bigger than me. But when we were able to detain them, my dad never called the police. He would have the thief call their parents. When their parents came to the store they would have to explain what they did and why. I suppose that would never work in today’s world.

I suppose you have already contacted the local police and asked for increased patrols. How about asking nearby neighbors to keep an eye on things? Another option might be to set a couple hunting/ trail cameras. Although more expensive I think some of the more elaborate ones have cellular connections that would alert you when there is activity. Historically people who steal are lazy and not to smart. Because they get away with it once, they think they will never be get caught.

Maybe someone else on TAC can offer better advice on this.

Cameras are a plus and deter a bit but they find ways around them and even good cameras struggle at night to provide anything worthy of providing an identification. Deterrence is a good start but you likely don’t have much control over that at this point I’d imagine. You could check with your local LE and ask about extra patrols. It’s not a perfect solution but it’s better than nothing.

Today I….. took my car for a nice long ride before work to go pick up my rear wheel flares from the paint shop. I can’t remember if I detailed it here but a few years ago I had concerns about my oil pressure, ultimately pull the engine, replaced the bearing and dropped it back in. Throughout last year I lost a bit of coolant but couldn’t figure out where. I did an oil analysis and discovered coolant in the oil along with some bearing wear apparently as a result of the coolant being present. Not looking forward to another engine pull I sought some advice and it was suggested to try some stop leak. I figured it couldn’t hurt so I did along with snugging up my timing chain cover as I suspected this to be the leak point.

Well after getting several good heat cycles on the engine my coolant level has remained consistent so I believe my leak is fixed! Today I changed to oil to get any remnants of coolant out hopefully and took a drive. I’m still not overly excited about my hot idle oil pressure but if nothing else it’s been consistent so I’m going to monitor and leave it be for now. I have a spare engine I freed up recently that I’d like to eventually build but I’m curious to see if it’ll run as is and maybe make a good backup to drop in if I need to pull mine again.

I’m also kind of excited as I picked up a new factory radio for my car. These 70-77 flip dial radios are basically the same except for some small internal improvements and  70-75 featured “Delco” in script as you can see on the one, and the 76 and 77 ones featured Delco in block letters. Nobody but me would probably know or care but my radio is the script style and this other one I found is block letter. I JUST had mine serviced but I’m going to have this new  one serviced and install it in place of my current one. I also got another 8 track player in the deal so I plan to have it serviced as well and will probably sell it and my “script” radio.

Brian,

I really liked the rotating drum dials on the old Delco radios. I thought it was a neat idea, but don't recall seeing it anywhere but Firebirds. I probably just wasn't aware of it in other cars.

Led Zepplin in the 8 track adds a real touch of class.

The coolant mixed with engine oil would definitely make me nervous. Hopefully you got it licked, but maybe should not beat on the engine too much until, you are sure.

I found this article posted by Rocky Rotella talking about Pontiac oil pumps and pressure. Supposedly 10 PSI for every 1,000 RPM should be adequate.

I wondered about the use of those radios in other vehicles and was recently told the radio itself was used in several but the case sometimes and more often the face around the dial and the dial itself would be changed to suit whatever vehicle it was in. I think they’re cool anyway.

As for Zep, I’m a big fan. Listen to a lot of music and different types but if I had to pick a favorite it’s LZ. I have all albums on vintage vinyl and all albums on 8 track with the exception of coda which is rare and quite expensive. I’m working on owning all on cassette and eventually compact disc. Why? Who knows lol.

Thanks for the info on the oil. Truthfully, I don’t beat on the engine as it is so that’s not an issue. Knowing the rate at which I lost coolant previously, I’m hopeful it’s sealed up. Another oil analysis at the end of the season is the plan.

I also read that article previously. I tend to believe that but I also see guys comment on 20-30psi at hot idle which I wish I had. Nonetheless, I’ve been as low as about 10psi at idle on a really hot day after an e way trip. Usually, I’m around 13ish after a highway. If I stay off the highway it’s usually higher. Obviously temperature dependent and this is at around 750rpm idle. Im consistently 30psi at 1500 rpm and 40 at 2000 so I think I’m still in decent shape.

We are building a deck in a new neighborhood. They are currently building 4 houses surrounding the house we are working on (thats a story in itself!). We spotted this guy who also lives in the 'hood. At the top of the bushy tall tree you can see his home.

Anyone see these in their area? We have a quite a few quarry's in our county and the roads run rampant with dump trucks. Years ago a guy painted 'Stay back, this throws stones' now all most of the trucks put these stickers on. Not sure why it bothers me but a pet peeve of mine. If the loads are covered and the rear pan clean there shouldnt be a problem. I think its funny that they think a homemade sign absolves them from responsibility. No different than putting a sign on your car saying 'I drink and drive, stay clear!'
Sorry just a rant. AND I used to drive a dump truck.

Kerry, I couldn’t agree with you more. That’s one of the reasons I try to avoid interstate highways with my TA. There is so much road debris, and with the density of vehicles all around you, it’s hard to avoid sometimes. I try to give truckers all the space they need, giving me a little more time to react should something fall off one or flung in the air by their tires.

Nice bird! We have a nest at work across the 75 acre pond and it's fun to watch the teen birds fish. And seeing the white head parents too.
