Kerry, I was never in little league, but played plenty of softball at recess and after school. In the Chicago area 16” was pretty popular. 16” was great for smaller lots or yards because you couldn’t hit them very far, also no need for mitts as they were easy on the hands once the balls were broken in. Nothing structured, just kids having fun. I agree many kids today are missing out on some real exercise and fun. Every time a see a young kid with an electric vehicle instead of pedal power I kind of shake my head.

Along the same lines I was happy to see kids around that age out on the 4th with fireworks and such... I didn't even know that many kids actually lived in the area, you simply never see anyone out on the street anymore.

Following along a couple of threads with previous owned 'birds, heres the one pic I found of my 1982 firebird. I also had an '85 trans am and other than the 2 now thats it. SO, not nearly enough to start my own thread, LOL. I bought this '82 brand new, when I got out of hs. I wanted a trans am in the worse way but this topped out what I could afford. I paid $9200. It was a base  bird, but fairly loaded. V6, good on gas, but that was about it.

It was an auto. I really liked the car except it was so underpowered. It was a base  bird but had power windows, door locks, a/c. At that time I hated t tops and wanted a hard top car so that was a bonus. Car came with plain hub caps. I put the american racing wheels on it, I later traded them to a guy for a set of 'bowling ball' trans am wheels and covers. I had the caps painted white. I took off the red stripes and the crazy chicken bird (yes it looked like that)that was on the sail panel. I eventually added a full aero kit to the bottom, had a  rear window louver that I had painted white. Yes there is a theme here, LOL. I had a front end collision and during the rebuild I had a trans am hood installed. When I was finished, it was a pretty decent trans am clone! Funny thing is that was my first new car and my pride and joy. I must have taken 1,000 pictures of it and this is the only one I could find.

Today I met forum member 5th T/A (aka Larry) to pick up the 301 engine originally in his 80 T/A. It was a treat to see his car as well. What a beautiful T/A and the new engine sounds amazing. He did a great job blending the new into old.

Anyway he also had a gas tank and thw original radiator for me too. All of these items will be going into my 79 301 formula. This should get that project back from the dead. I will try to rebuild that thread soon.






Getting a lot of use out of my new engine lift!







Thanks again Larry! This will really make this car good again!

I love your car! I can't even describe how cool your original low mileage car is.

I like your new eng. lift. I believe that's what the Norwood plant used in the 70s, when they put these F/Bs together.  :)

Today I hung this on my wall. It was given to me yesterday by a very close friend of mine. Our friendship goes back to fall of 1968. We met in a study hall talking about cars. His mom just got a new 1969 GP and even though he didn't have a driver's license he had already done some great burnouts in a parking lot. We could easily write a book about our escapades, mostly having to do with Pontiacs.

This Firebird wall hanging was made by his girlfriend at the time, probably 1976.

Real talent IS becoming less and less. Like you said there is actual talent in that and it is appreciated. I think I value real talent more than ever. So many people with their heads down stuck in a phone not exploring their own talent.

One of the things that attracts me to TAC are the ambitious projects that some have taken on. I really enjoy seeing when a member takes what some would call a basket case beyond repair. Often needing years or decades to complete, yet they hang in there to completion. More often than not, many don’t have a background in automotive repair, body, paint, mechanical or electrical. They learn and do much of the work themselves. Often these “talented” individuals don’t hesitate to share their developed skills with others. In my mind working on something hands on is far more rewarding than anything you can do with a cell phone.

Yesterday, my local club " Cruisin Tigers Pontiac" had its monthly meeting at the Volvo Museum in Volo Illinois. For anyone who lives in Northern Illinois or Southern Wisconsin it's worth the trip. It is a family-oriented attraction with much more than just cars. Many decades ago, I would take my girls here several times a year. Since then, it has grown considerably. Yesterday they had several events going on including Volo fest that offered free entry and food for Volo residents. You can check out their website at www.volocars.com

They have four good sized buildings of cars; all makes and vintages. The last building has many movie/TV cars and some celebrity owned vehicles. It was an enjoyable afternoon and a good day to take my TA for a ride.

….went for an about an hour and a half cruise. Used to be kind of a Sunday evening ritual since my wife gets up super early for work therefore goes to bed early but hasn’t happened too often this year. It was a nice evening for it.

Dash looks nice! It was nice out. Fall is great time to get out and drive . Things slow down a bit for me too this time of year so hopefully I can get more seat time.

I see the Volo cars in Hemmings all of the time. Looks like a fun day. I wish there was a local club to me that would get together for a weekend cruise now and then. For the prices, they may be a tad bit high for being a dealer, but still in the neighborhood. I still think that the 69 Trans Am is underpriced. They made less than 800 of them. If it was a mopar something or other that had a production total of under 800 they would be million dollar cars!!

Really cool pictures from that museum! The prices of these cars are really crazy. It makes me think that we are near the cap on them though. The only people that can realistically afford cars like that are the collectors that have a soft spot for the cars they grew up with. In the next 10-20 years, those will be the IROC, GTA, and LS1 Fbody's and other cars from the late 80's through 2000.

Thank you. Stock bulbs too actually lol. I love these dashes and gauges. Hard to improve upon in my opinion. Headlights on the other hand I’d like to try to improve. May try making my own relay harness at some point.

Yesterday or was it the day before... anyways I attempted to start my 71 for the first time this year. I replaced the ignition cables that were all eaten by the rabbits and charged the battery. The battery (brand new purchased last year) would not hold charge and I was not getting fuel to the carb. I was not happy but such is life.

Well, I ran across a guy selling some 1949 Ford F1 truck parts at a price I couldn't refuse.  So I made a 2 1/2 Hr trip to Indiana and pick up this pile (Yes it is really rusted and has holes) but it's really not that bad for my extremely low budget build.



I haven't really started the build other than collecting parts. The plan is to peel apart a 2003 4x4 S10 and leave as much as possible of the floor and firewall.  Then graft the cab of the F1 onto it. Trying to make a safe but cool daily driver for my soon to be driving son.

Wondering if others would be interested in a build thread and if the moderators would approve it.?

The engine was from a member I picked up a few weeks back (that's for my formula build....) I got 3 fenders, 2 grills, 2 doors and a bunch of miscellaneous parts.

Go for it Luke, it takes lots of artistic vision, talent and time to turn an S10 into a 1949 F1. Seems like all pickups are hot right now.

I picked up a new tool this weekend. I've always wanted a lathe, but couldn't justify the price as all the ones that I ever saw were $1,500-2,000 for the ones that I wanted. As I usually do, I was browsing the classified section on FB Marketplace (the only thing FB is good for), and came across a listing for a "metal lave". It looked like a quality unit that was marked down from $1,800 to $900. That was within the range of possibility for me and bonus was upon further inspection, it was a metal lathe and mill combo! Then after more carefully inspecting the photo, it was a Smithy 1340 Granite edition. It's a full size 3 in 1 Metal lathe, mill and drill press combo. Retail is just shy of $6k for a brand new unit, and used ones were going for around $3k.

It was about a 2 hour drive for me, but the price was worth the drive out there. Unfortunately when I got there, it was literally at the far end of the families 10x20 storage shed that was full of many other heavy tools. Bandsaws, wood plane table, and porch furniture, other woodworking tools. After spending 20 mins digging it out, I was able to pull it out (by myself) far enough to test it to make sure that it functioned properly. I was able to get it turned on and the lathe worked perfectly, but the mill wouldn't turn on... I was still very interested in the unit so I proceeded to load it in my truck(basically by myself). Wow, way heavier than I thought it was. I got busy loading it and forgot to ask to negotiate the price. I asked if they would take any lower, and took my offer of $760! I couldn't be happier, so I made the trip home and got it unloaded, again by myself. He was a cool guy, and he mentioned to me that it was his grandfather's lathe that he didn't know much about. He said that he was surprised that I was the first person to respond to his ad in three weeks. I didn't want to break his heart that the reason was he spelled Metal Lathe wrong. :cool: But good for me haha  :lol:

After I got it spun around and centered on the blocks. The machine appears to have very little use and seems very tight, just neglected. It has surface rust on the bed, main beam and main lathe chuck. I spent a few hours on Saturday closely inspecting, cleaning and learning what all the levers and knobs were. I was able to confirm that the mill head was engaging, the gears, but for some reason wasn't turning. The mill head wouldn't spin when engaged and the motor sounded labored. Not sure what was causing it, but with the gears engaged the mill head wouldn't spin. I tried it with the gears engaged with the motor on and gave it a little help spinning and it started to turn on it's own! I also noticed the belt tensioner wasn't spinning properly as it was also frozen. I sprayed some lubrication on it and turned it on again this time let it run and it started off pretty slow, but kept spinning faster. After about 30 seconds it came right up to speed! What a relieve, no weird sounds and it looked nice and tight.









I reached out to Luke (Thanks man), and got some tips and help since I'm not familiar at all with this level of equipment. He was a huge help identifying what I need to do and buy. The major components are there, but I'm missing a few small things before I can put this back into service. I've since ordered a drawbar for the mill, a clamping kit and lathe tooling. It also was missing the chuck key, and I grabbed a self ejecting unit from Smithy. While I could use a 3/8" ratchet, but I was reading about people forgetting they are still attached to the chuck and them being thrown across the room at high speeds. Feel like that's $25 bucks well spent getting a self ejecting one haha.

I'm going to continue to clean it up and lubricate all the moving parts before I attempt to use it. Looking forward to start machining some parts. I could have used this soo many times when I was building my Camaro.

Congrats RG. Now we know where to go to get our solid driveshafts machined.  :lol:

Glad you got it going Ryan! The machines are the cheap part it's the tooling that can really rack up fast. A fun little project is making a fly cutter that holds a lathe tool. I'll have to find the one I made a few years back. It gives you some practice with the lathe and the mill. You can also make those T slot nuts too. You'll find yourself interesting ways or reasons use your new machine. Maybe making angled transmission mounts...  :D

So funny, but I was literally thinking about this as a project I could do now that I have a mill.
