Fall Leaves

Not firebird related, I know, but it indirectly is, to me. I can't get back into my garage, till this mess is cleaned up.
Pics from yesterday's events. My leaf machine/tractor is down, due to fuel system issues, (that I'm still fighting with.)
Decided to do the yard clean-up the old fashion way. lots of manual labor. Don't have any woods around my yard to dump them, so the piles need-ta be carted to the dump. A real PITA. Wanted to conclude yesterday, but mother nature threw 30 MPH guts at me while I was loading. Today, one more load to go, and of course, it's raining...again.

Your luck runs like mine.  We now just grind ours up twice weekly during the leaf-falling season.  I bought one of those sweepers that you pull behind a mower.  I couldn't make a full round before it was loaded and had to be dumped.  At 3 acres that we keep mowed, it would be an easy 80+ trips to the back of our place to dump them all.  So I sold it, and went back to mulching

My town vacuums it up once a year and it's this week, of course I could not do it since I was not around and now will have to deal with it in the spring.

I live right in the woods. My lot is 5 acres but I only mow about 1/10th of it. The leaves are def. overwhelming at times. Over the years I have tried everything. I had a bagger on my mower at first, but like Mike said, 1/2 a trip and it was full. I would spend several days doing it. Then I would rake onto a tarp, load in the truck and haul to the back and dump in the woods. That too was a lot of work. Then I broke down and bought a back pack blower. Between that and the small battery powered one we can keep the yard pretty clear. There is enough 'rough' space at the perimeter of my yard we just blow everything from the centre out. We try to do so about once a week to keep up with it.

I envy anyone living in the woods. I would never rake, but being in a neighborhood, don't we all have-ta "keep up with the Joneses"?

We rake leaves, just in case of a wildfire.  That's one of the hazards of being surrounded by woods, but one we happily accept.

I would dig a well, and soak the leaves, (daily), rather than monkey around with leaves. Think of it as "compost" for your lawn.

My lot is only about a 1/3 of an acre, but we have lots of mature Oak trees. Several that are over 30" in diameter. I use a backpack blower and an '8 X10' tarp to drag the leaves to the street and eventually my village will pick them up. In the fall when acorns start dropping you need a hard hat. I pick up a lot of the acorns, enough to fill a hundred-gallon dumpster twice. While I am not fond of picking up acorns or leaves, in the last two months falling trees from my neighbor's yard has been a bigger concern. I had one tree break in two mid-September. It took a couple of sections of my neighbor's fence and destroyed about a half dozen smaller trees in my yard. I decided it was a good time to plant some more grass but hurt my back pulling out stumps. At that time, I noticed he had another tree (about 60' tall) in his yard that looked very sickly and ready to fall down. This tree was very close to my rear garage and looked like it might fall on it. I told him even though the tree was on his property, I would split the cost to have it taken down.  I made the offer a couple of times, but he never replied. A week ago Saturday we had winds blowing in excess of 60 MPH all day. Around 3:30 PM that tree came down. Fortunately it just barely missed my garage. I consider myself very fortunate.

Gotta love living where deciduous trees are close to non-existent or introduced. Then again, we also call it Winter as nothing falls, leaves or snow, and can drive all year round because it's only slightly cooler than the rest of the year! Had our fair share of storms in recent times, like the pic, soon finds which trees aren't so solid and also the more trusted types for parking under! I do like the autumn colours though, again, we tend to only get those where introduced trees are planted. The wild bushland tends to look the same year in year out, whatever month. I think if we had so many dry leaves on the ground it would just be even more of a breeding site for snakes and bities. The ones you can see aren't the problem!

That was close Larry! I had a tree fall on my old shed last year and have yet to get it cleaned up Laziness, no time etc. We have one large oak tree on our property. It is adjacent to my garage and hangs over the parking area for my cars. I do not dare leave them outside when the acorns start to fall. You are correct, it is def. a hard hat area!! Years ago right after we got our Mercedes I let it parked out and got a nice nut sized dent right in the middle of the hood. Irritated me every time I saw it.

My neighbor has a large oak tree, and I get his leaves, but not so many nuts. I don't mind his leaves, cause I have a few maples on my lot, which he gets some of mine.  But they are nice, most of the year. The worst is now, (when they're on the ground), but because of their benefits the rest of the year, I can still tolerate the worst. Tough when you have neighbors with skanky trees, that need removal.

I hear this a lot. People in congested neighborhoods, cutting down trees, but still end up raking. I myself would still rather deal with leaves, than have an M/T lot W/O foliage. But of course there are issues with branches growing over roof tops, or powerlines that can be problematic.
