I think I posted pics when I built my new shop a few years ago. Anyway, its still not done, but is now earning its keep and paying the bills. Figured Id post some current pics to show what I do on my sparetime :shock: I am out in 'the field' so to speak most days of the week working. When we get a slow day, evenings when Im not too tired and weekends I am doing 'shop work'. Currently have an antique table that needs refinished, some replacement kitchen cabinet parts, a pile of operating shutters, and an entry door for a church. Shop is 24' x 40' and not nearly big enough!!

That's a great looking shop Kerry. Looks big, bright and organized. I have done enough electrical, plumbing, indoor framing and drywall to be dangerous. But have never done any furniture or cabinetry. One of my brothers has built a lot of furniture and cabinetry, he would be envious of your setup.

Love a good workable shop!
I don't know how you find time to do anything! I have been working on my money pit (boat) the last month or so... Instead of saw dust my place is covered in gelcoat and gelcoat dust... I hate dust, but currently standing in an inch of it....
I think you need to post the pictures of the outside of your shop. That really shows off your talents and creativity.

I wish I could do finish work. I don't have the skill or the patience. When I first got married (1985) I had just built my first house (880 square feet- 2BR, 1 bath). I couldn't afford cabinets so I tried my hand at building some. They worked fine, but thankfully I don't have pictures of them. They weren't nice enough for most people's garages :lol: I'm a framer,and know my limits.

Mike, I am 4th generation doing this stuff, my dad did phenomenal trim work and built a decent kitchen cabinet. My grandfather was a builder/developer and would build dozens of houses at one time (post war boom). Dad built all of the kitchen cabinets in them. But, dads real love of carpentry was framing. He excelled at that as well but told me many times that he would rather frame a house than do anything else. He particularly enjoyed roof framing, the more complicated the better. Hence myself and my brothers all learned at a very young age how to lay out a rafter, whether it be common, jack, valley, hip etc. Everytime I see a house going up now (most of the time with trusses) I wonder how many of the 'carpenters' would know how to hand frame the roof if need be. We would have a test when hiring a new carpenter. Give them a framing square and a 16' 2x6, tell them the dimension of the house, the pitch and then ask them to lay out a rafter. I think the fail rate was about 99%! I dont mind framing, but it is by far not my favorite part of the building business. IF I could make a decent living just working out of my shop I would be happy.

Framing is definitely fun. I'm sure it doesn't pay so well as finish work, though.

Thanks, dropped them off to the customer, they are going to paint then I will install.

I guess painting is fashionable, l personally feel that wood grain is too beautiful to cover up.

I agree, to me a paint job is a cheap way to cover up a cheap door.

These are mahogany, they wont weather very well but will be stable and very rot resistant. Paint will keep them protected, and a good paint job should last years. Outside millwork I only use cypress or mahogany. Mahogany is a bit better for doors and trim as it will take a profile a bit better, and not quite as oily as cypress.
