Title: Pro Stock Tribute Project / Temp thread
Post by: RamblerRacer on March 02, 2021, 07:06:26 PM
Seems like even my attempt to keep updates is lost
Other threads started after are still here
I wonder what gives?
PS Camaro vs TA?

latest update anyway

I got the lower band of red taped off last week and painted it this past Saturday.

Was ready to clear the thing and found this. Best I can make out of it was there was a space heater right there and the area looked like it had flashed but was soft underneath the next coat of  base

Got it back in line though

This blotch ended up inn the white area >>> that will require some touch up later

Carried on though

Here is an update.
Time is getting tight >>> opening day is 4/17 and we have a ton of work to do
Only the hood is left to clear, but I will have a couple days I will not be able to get to it and there is also the work to get the engine back together.
It may well end up being like one of those shows where the paint is drying on the way to the show

Thanks.

We wanted to bring it out at the track completed, turnkey with the paint completed and all the contingency stickers on like the original R-M Camaro.  My cousin can’t get the chassis cert done at this shop so we are going to have to haul it to the track for a group cert. event next Sunday.  It will not be possible to get what we need done by then, but oh well, the cat will be out of the bag after that.

My cousin is getting his shop name done in a decal using what is close to the R-M font and we are also going to place the contingency stickers in the same place as the original car with exceptions for the sponsors for stuff on the car he is using.  Things like Hoosier vs Goodyear will be in the same place just different brands. The Lee Shepherd Head on the fender will be replaced with the engine builder, a close friend of my cousin and we’ll known builder in the area Cerralli.

A couple more pictures
I sanded the inside of the door anticipating hitting it with another coat of clear. I decided since I had some gray and matte clear left I'd hit the inside with that to match the rest of the interior. I think it will finish it of nice. I thinned the matt clear to get it to spray out more even.  It went on "patchy" other wise. i did one on Saturday and one last night.

We had to go to the track today to get the chassis cert'd since it runs quicker than 9.99.

Rain was in the forecast so I got my car out of the trailer so we could haul his up to Island Dragway.

The chassis had already been cert'd before so there was no reason to suspect it would not pass, but it was crappy ride in pouring rain for over an hour each way. It was a fun thing to do with my cousin though.

It was neat seeing the car out in the natural light.

Progress since the last update has been getting the start of getting Lexan fitted and some other odds and ends.

Some pictures

Next step is to fasten the front windshield and cut and install the DS door window, also Lexan.  I have to test fit the old PS window to check the fitment like I did with the old DS window, then I can cut that one too. The rear window is also going to be Lexan and will be a trick to fit for sure.

That is the truth, but the funny thing is it did not even make it to the trailer!
Pushing it out I said hold up to my cousin, and he kept pushing it right into the sign pole.
Just a little blemish on the wing and tiniest chip on the lip of the trunk.  No way it is christened, no worries going forward

Thanks Jack. It’s just a little “side hustle” for the off season to keep busy.

The biggest thing my cousin and I are looking forward to is the reaction by the track announcer Hank.  He is a wealth of NHRA history and will recognize what we were after right away. He will love it.

And with all the little motor troubles being addressed, this thing is gonna fly!

Ryan’s deal is what drew me to post this project up. We both sport some TA cred though, so I believed it would be well received.

Ryan could do a Grumpy Jenkins redux on the Camaro and just go straight line. But his car is the real deal for a modern go fast everyday on the street A-ticket ride as it is.

Yup, sure does. I have a 67 Camaro project as well. Once I get moving again I might post it up as well. Maybe we should have a build section for non firebirds.  We've had GTO, 32 Fords and Camaro builds. Would be nice if they were grouped together.

Have not posted in a while. I've been all out working to get the car done for opening day which was last Saturday. Unfortunately although we got there the day ended up in a rain out.

So here are some pictures picking up after dragging the car out for a chassis cert

Lexan window installation
The pictures bounce between front and rear with some showing how I did it

Spacing out the new holes that had to be drilled >>> made a "gauge" with a paint stick
(https://i.imgur.com/l9CnpLUl.jpg)

Rivet-nuts in the A-pillar >>> the rest is secured with button heads and ny-lock nuts
(https://i.imgur.com/9HCg2Zwl.jpg)

Made spacers to support the Lexan as I transferred the holes in the body to the material

Lexan in place to transfer holes

Cutting and punching the holes for the rubber gasket
Transferred holes to rubber

rubber installed >>> secured with weather stripping adhesive and held in place with clamps and screws until set

Windshield installed and here the motor is back together. the whole thing started because we had to do head gaskets

The next post

We got the car running and I'd love to post a video of it firing up and then running on alcohol

The final step was to do the car up with contingency stickers in the manner that the original R-M Camaro was with contemporary mfg's. that pay out included. So the original Speed-Pro was swapped out with JE pistons because that is what is in the engine. Many others used just because they were on the original car. A friend of the shop made a decal for the Heights Racing "team" name using the R-M font that you can see in the last group of pictures.

Pictures

Hoosier instead of the original Goodyear but in the same location >>> so you get the idea of what we were going for
(https://i.imgur.com/DTAYUUJl.jpg)

VP pays if you have a receipt / B-M instead of Hurst / Summit vs. Winston / STP just because. Got the RFC decal on there because Jesus Saves.

Pennzoil is an old school original that a racing friend had in a big bag of decals
ACP is the old Stahl headers from near York PA.

Moroso is an original and Summit pays to have their log book decal on
(https://i.imgur.com/7aMLTuUl.jpg)

Bill Ceralli is the engine builder out of Paterson, NJ
Put his decal on instead of the Lee Shepherd Racing Heads

Door decals >>> MSD, Comp Cams, Manley, >>> old school originals that are part of the build.  ATI, Altronics, Moroso and Calvert are payers

As the saying goes, “not with a bang but a whimper”
Rained out >>> me >>> on the line waiting to do the burnout >>>and then rain?
The track workers dried the track a few times then it was called at about 5:30pm
Stay tuned.

We had some good weather last Saturday and were able to run.
The AMC was running low 11.20s and the Camaro went as quick as 9.18.

Here is a video clip taken at about the speed traps

Rambler,

Thanks for sharing the video. The Camaro looks and sounds great. It must feel good to finally get some runs in after all the hours of work! 9.18 seems pretty respectable, but I have no idea what would be considered competitive for this car.

5th TA

Not my car, but it’s fun watching it
My AMC runs 11.20s and thats fun.
The Camaro is my cousins.

You are right tho.... it’s fun to be around and get reactions from other racers
They dig the paint scheme and appreciate the effort.
My cousin has been track champ several times.
Everyone respects him at the track and appreciates him as a friend.

Unfortunately we found we lost a racer friend tonight due to C 19
Sucks...stay on your guard TAC folks

Rambler,

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. This last year has been a really hard one for so many.

11.20 is way faster than any car I have ever driven. Is that with an AMC engine? I wouldn’t mind hearing more about your AMC. I think it was a Gremlin?

My quickest motorcycle is a 2010 Yamaha VMAX, good for a low 10 second quarter mile. 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and 0-100 in 5.9. I would never consider racing it, but it is an incredible adrenaline rush on the street. Kind of point and shoot, you have to be completely focused when you get on it. After riding it, everything else feels absolutely slow.

Thanks for posting the video JT. Looks like you had the front wheels going up in the air on launch, very nice!

Are you running an AMC motor? Looks like an auto trans, I think AMC was using TorqueFlites in that era.

Title: Re: Pro Stock Tribute Project / Temp thread
Post by: RamblerRacer on May 04, 2021, 07:53:38 PM
5th TA.

It has a 401 AMC engine in it and a TH400 salvaged out of an old Wagoneer.
The output shaft and tail shaft housing were converted over to a 2wd configuration. It sports a manual valve body and a killer torque converter. Up until a couple of seasons ago it was all AMC down to the Model 20 rear, but I killed it.

It 60 foots around 1.49 to 1.50

The motor is a 9.8:1 pump gas unit with a high torque solid cam.
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and AED prepped 750 Carb.
Tiny out of the box Heddman headers make up the exhaust.

Tires are Hoosier 30 x 9 radial slicks.

It weighs about 3150 with me in it.

Not nearly one of the fastest cars but very consistent. That’s what you need bracket racing.
Driver dropped the ball on the lap shown.

I have had the car since 1984.
