Canadian Pontiac Parts
« on: February 28, 2024, 07:16:53 AM »
Does anyone know if there is a difference in buying Pontiac Parts from a dealer in Canada as opposed to the US? I know Pontiac marketed cars there that were more or less chevelles. So I am not sure if I am buying "Pontiac" parts or rebadged Chevy stuff.
The reason I ask is that I may have an oppurtunity to get my hands on NOS stuff. I cant divulge my source yet, LOL but I have a friend that knows of a Pontiac dealership that has been closed for years now. He says its packed full of parts. I would like to get my hands on some of it but I dont want to end up with a bunch of chevy stuff I have no use for.

Yep, instead of having Firebird script fender emblems they have Oiseau de Feu.

Hope that helps.

I know I asked before, was that out of a 74-78 model? Still blue or switched to the gold/yellow of 79?

They sold a lot of Firebirds in Canada and none of them are "Canadian".  But I think the bulk of their product was Chevrolet drivetrain and unique trim.  So when you can buy parts it just depends on what they're for.  Firebird parts would all be the same with a few little exceptions like in some years a km speedo.

Yes, I knew there was no canadian version of the firebird, I did find that there were only a few models that were badged as 'Acadians'. Maybe I will get lucky findy some decent nos stuff. Unfortunately I wont know for a couple of months.

AussieTA - I should have asked prior, is your Canadian KM/H speedo a 2-window or 3-window version at the bottom? I had (maybe still do) a 3-window version from an 80-81 here once, extra light was for choke. I can't recall if they are easily swapped into earlier clusters with the same circuit board, whereas the tacho types can't. I couldn't see a part number in the listing that mentioned the Canadian option, it may have been there but wasn't clear. Or they may have been in separate specialist listing like export model parts were.

Speaking of export, are you referring to the Japanese amber lens versions? There's a guy in Sydney that supplies the amber ends if you haven't seen them listed, need to graft onto existing and rewire harness though. A few times I'd asked owners of the Japanese models how their wiring layout was, but as usual, no response. I know it wasn't easy to convert the stock setup unless you had an extra few trunk harnesses as spares. It's not as simple as swapping wires or bulb holders, half only fit in one location, others only have one terminal in a twin-terminal socket and if you you try to swap you'll end up with the dim side of the brake light bulb. Not sure how others do them, many are vague, seemingly purchased that way or had someone else do the job, which could be a can of worms if they'd actually check closer.

Yep, I'm on that group, just looking.

I posted a few questions way back but no owners were keen enough to attempt to reply to. There's only a few details that are specific, you'd think just one would be interested to discuss or find out more. Many are on the group because they found out later their car was one, but since converted back to standard. More than a couple have been shipped back to the US, even a guy in Russia that I was helping on another forum after he brought one back. He was also converting it again. I suggested the group as it even had photos of his car on it, but no, he never joined. One day I'll find the guy that goes to more trouble for my car and helping out than I do.

I see one of the ebay sellers still has a few of the NOS 80-81'ish metric speedos, I'd grab one if it suited my cluster. Having said that it may be what I had a used one of anyway, if I didn't sell it already.

edit:
Acktualllyy.... that speedo I posted with the longer 2-windows is really a 3-window of the 80-81 type with the top window (choke?) taped over. So still haven't seen an earlier specific version.

Ok, Maybe you have this figured out now, but I’’l try and clarify the Canadian Pontiacs. This is from memory and I might have the years off a little.

64 - 68 Acadian was a rebadged Nova.
66 - 69 Beaumont was a rebadged Chevelle.
66 -69 Pariessian was a rebadged Impala.

These cars had their own Pontiac grills and tail lights along with the badging.

I am pretty sure they were sold through Pontiac dealers and as you pointed out they had Pontiac details, grilles etc. But they do not have a Pontiac script at all. I was at an all chevelle show a couple of years ago and there was a guy with a Beaumont. He was quite offended when I called it a Canadian Pontiac! I thought it was kinda funny.

My 1979 Y84 is Canadian, has the handy dandy KMPH speedo for Australian roads, and it has the 1979 style yellow/amber script. It's otherwise identical to a USDM Firebird wiring harness and circuit.
