Title: 1978 SE (How much is it worth???)
Post by: d_hache on January 26, 2023, 02:45:08 PM
Hello gang, my friend just bought a 1978 Trans Am.
The car is in the middle of a restoration.
Allot of the metal work is already done and there was very little rust on the car.
The car is a rolling shell but everything seams to be there and has many spare parts.
I will post some picks when I have them.

My question is this, how much do you think it’s worth now and what will it be worth once done?
It will be a nice restoration but it will not be one of those exact from the factory restorations.
I know those questions are hard to answer but just trying to get a ball park.

BIG CAVEAT:  The car no longer has the original tranny and motor 

1978 SE
Hurst T TOP
Tan Interior
AC
WS6
The original motor was WS7
Power everything

Judging from this past weeks BJ auction, it could be worth anything from 70k - 200k!!  What is the end game? I think if I were  building that car to sell as much as I like originality I would put a modern ls or whatever they are called motor in it. Upgrade suspension, the interior can be pretty much stock, maybe re work the console to add some sort of touch screen something crap. That is the kind of car getting big money right now.

If the car is built to original specs, without correct drivetrain (I doubt it will hurt the value significantly, a corvette yes, trans am, not so much) I would think it would sell at auction easily for 60k+

And that it will cost more to complete than what it will be worth, aka any car project.
