Mechanical / Re: Tilt Steering Column

Thanks for the info.  I was hoping there wasn't too much difference.

I made an offer and they accepted so the tilt column should be here in a week.

I'll get the kit and make it new again.

I'm sure the parts can be swapped over, but one that is already from a manual would be so much easier and be like having spares to select from. These days I'd put a kit through one prior to install, new tilt bushes and the like, paint and install.

I feel left out. Guy who bought his 70 model in 78, but the doortrims and handles have never been off since new...
If I was on the forum still I'd claim my RHD-converted 78 was factory since it's been that way for the 20 years I've had it. None seem to have resorted to build diagrams yet. Like Facebook, the stupid topics get replies, the serious ones ignored. I seem to recall my seatbelt post about which way the twist went also went ignored haha. Had to resort to many photos to see if my rewebbed seatbelts were the right way. As it turns out, one way to ID Firebird rear belts to other GM, as they mount up not down, opposite anchor, rambling now...

Sorry, Aus. I think I just bolted mine down in the center and called it good. I plan to put my factory radio back in do didn't bother attaching the console to the dash.

The bucking back and fourth usually indicates a warped flywheel.
If it's the first time its being surfaced it should be okay.  When it gets too thin is when they usually warp easily.

Was chatting to a guy with a 73, he'd never seen the plates. Dug up some restoration pics and doesn't even appear to have the openings, just solid panel. So who knows, except that they are worth huge money....

Rich, is that how yours was, no hole at all or just the opening, no covers? I thought they could be an early extra insulation option level, sound, heating, acoustics whatever, since hit and miss application and no real purpose otherwise. Mine (78) had the extra insulation option, and has the wadding patch over the opening. But then, maybe they all did by then rather than part of anything. But then, the few I've seen up close were also in red dip primer so possibly not unless the option was tended to long before Fisher saw them, even as a shell. Who knows.

Just when you think you are wasting your time asking the big important questions that matter, or sharing trivia you think will be of interest, just think, there's currently a post on PY forum about the factory position of window winders. Everyone has an opinion and so many claim theirs have never been removed. BS all the way. Even if there was 'correct' way it probably still came down to if the line guy was left or right handed, where he held it and then thumped it on before winding up. And then, wherever the next 50 owners and mechanics decided it was going to go back on before they got it and claim it's still got factory fingerprints on it.

That's the one. late 76 dated box, 78 dated docket. And console warped and distorted from years of something heavy on it.

Just scrolling through and the holes reminded me that I'd seen them before but not in use, even when I searched my saved pics of CB and 8-tracks.
I think 80 or 81 they changed that end brace again when the computer went there, not my thing. I think the body on them is different anyway, not just the access door but the side rib and small cutaway above carpet for some reason.

As for the rivet condition, not sure. I've seen many in colour, hard to tell if original or console touch-ed up, plenty in surface rust/dark grey, also had to tell if went in bare or poorly applied paint years ago has flaked of. And of course, NOS is often spare parts supply, not production line, sometimes things were done differently.

My repro console has no opinion here! While doing a search I also found an older forum post of a guy cutting the front out of his ABS console to install the CB/8-track in factory style. Can't recall if had any of the extra brackets or the heavy duty shelf bracket/heat shield under it but simply showed that particular console was designed with nothing like that in mind. Not sure how much they've changed since, probably not much.

Here's another question, that rear bracket that hooks up to dash, does the dash sit on top of it or do the brackets tuck up inside the lip like hooks? Looks like stand-alone screw mount into dash from below. I could probably look at some photos but heading out the door instead! Mine has neither, was the ABS type which I had to remove and my dash also different.

To my knowledge the only difference would be the neutral safety/reverse light switch. An auto version would be that combination whereas a manual version would just contain the reverse light switch. Neutral safety would be accomplished by the clutch pedal switch. The backdrive linkage is different between auto and manual but otherwise I don’t believe the column is different. Maybe someone can correct me if I’m wrong.
