Title: 4 Speed transmission
Post by: roadking77 on June 21, 2023, 06:33:28 AM
Another silly question.
The shifter lever on my 4 speed trans is bolted to the linkage with 2 through bolts. In the service manual it says that the handle should insert into a slot with a spring clip to release it. No bolts involved?

Possibly not original then. This is probably the best picture I have for when I rebuilt my shifter. You can see that there are no bolts holding the lever. It slips in between two rubber isolators I guess I’ll call them and a clip holds it in place firmly. Does your shifter happen to say competition plus on the side? My shifter is not original my car but I believe it’s from a 76.

I would guess it's a comp plus.  The Hurst "competition plus" had adjustment stop bolts front and rear at 2nd and 3rd gear.  The factory Pontiac shifters had this deleted and had the snap on lever.(https://images.holley.com/583x/3916848_01.jpg)

Here is my shifter. Know nothing about these things, learning something new every day. The transmission is original to the car, curious what the difference is between the competition and regular shifter, and if this is what came on the TATA.

Here’s a link that might give you some of the info you’re looking for. I’m not positive about that being original to a TATA but I lean toward probably not but again, I’m not sure. They’re not hard to take apart and rebuild. I rebuilt my OEM shifter and it is much much better

Well the things already mentioned are obvious things you can see.  I don't know if there's a quality difference or an internal difference.  I kinda doubt it.  I have taken them apart, but I never really compared both side by side.
