Body bushings spinning bolt 78 Trans am
« on: January 05, 2024, 08:37:30 PM »
The left side was problem free. The right front spun so shop stopped until  he had more time to remove inner fender.   I have read that floor may need to be cut to access nut.  Car is rust free so hate thought of this and may let it ride.  From your experience is the nut accessible or is that only option.  Reason having replaced is due to originals dried out but intact   Thank you

Have a bit of a scroll through the various forums. There was a guy who did this in the last 6-12 months and tried to do it without any cutting at all. From memory he may have fashioned up a fancy spanner tool and found an access angle to hole the nut, then to also tack weld it back in place. Others may recall.

This is just a random video that came up when I did a quick search just then, might not be of any use, didn't watch it.

I'm not sure if you can see this next link if not a member. If not let me know and I'll copy and paste it.

I have removed the subframe bolts twice without problems. Back in 1980 when I restored my very rusty 1975 TA and in 2020 when I removed the subframe on my 1980. Both times I hit them with an impact wrench and they came right off. I think I might have been lucky. In your case if the caged nuts weren't already spinning, I would have suggested soaking them in penetrating oil for a day or two.

While I can't offer any shortcuts on breaking them lose, I strongly recommend you replace the isolators and any of the hardware that is rusty. On my 1975 the bolts were badly rusted and only half the original diameter. By not replacing the bolts I would have been flirting with an eventual disaster.

Thank you for the YouTube video.  If the c clamps work that would save a lot of time and grief

It worked.  Took time to move c clamp around but finally positioned it to where it held position and bolt came out with impact wrench. Also able to reuse the bolt. Glad to be finished no cutting or inner fender well needed    Great improvement
