AACA Convention
« on: February 16, 2023, 07:11:16 AM »
Last weekend I attended the annual convention of the Antique Automobile Club of America. They moved it to Williamsburg VA as of the last couple of years, imo it could not be in a better locale. Its a rough 3 hr drive for me (traveling through N VA is about as miserable as any place I have ever traveled) but the end result is worth it. My first time to this event (ironically it has been in Philly forever which is about a 45 min drive) and I had a good time. Its a 3 day event culminating in a banquet at which national awards are given. I did not get any nor expected to and did not attend. I did attend many of the seminars that were presented during the 2 days. These were about an hr long on various topics. I also attended the judging school and at this point will be considered an apprentice at my first meet (hopefully Gettysburg). They had a large auditorium with vendors settup with a variety of wares. This was not a car show, however the local AACA affiliation had an impromptu gathering on saturday morning with about 15 members bringing their old cars.

Wonder how different judging is for antique motorcycles vs cars?

Sounds pretty interesting. Knowing all the details in judging could be helpful if you compete in an event and just nice to understand the process.

I like the Comet convertible. Growing up I remember seeing these at a dealership by my house, for about $2700.00.

For those that may not know, the AACA requires cars to be presented as they were new at the dealership. No mods at all. I have been a member off and on for quite a few years. Although my black car would fit the category I did not feel it was 'perfect' enough to be point judged so I have and will enter in what is the DPC (driver participation class). This is for cars that fit their criteria but are used as drivers and driven to shows as opposed to being trailered. I have been building my 79 with intentions of having it point judged. One of the big reasons for me to attend the judging school was to get an inside point of view so to speak.

As far as the judging goes, all vehicles start with 400 pts and there is a prescribed deduction for a multitude of categories. As far as I know the motorcycles are judged with the same criteria as the cars.

I'm sure that would be a lot of fun.  I've never been a member.   We do seem to have a pretty healthy chapter here.

Had I known you were coming we could have met up during your visit here. I've heard of AACA but haven't been to any of their events.

Rich, I knew you were in the area and honestly did think about you when I got to town. It was a pretty tight weekend though. I suppose we could have got together for lunch on Sunday. I will def give you a shout next time im in the area.

FBParts is spot on. The local AACA chapter in your area is very active. I dont have contact info but if you go to the main web page I think you can find links to local. The Grand National shows and the Nationals are member only as far as entered cars, but a lot of the local chapters put on events with all types of cars (modified) and non member participation. Knowing your car as much as seeing it on here, I would think you are def. AACA eligible, become a member and start entering in the DPC (driver) class. This would fit you perfect.

Definitely understand, trips are like that sometimes, even fun ones. There's only so much time in a day.  Hit me up next time, hopefully the schedule isn't too tight :)

FYI, Until March 18th, the NK Cruisers put on a cruise at Rosie's at Colonial Downs, Lot 7, 10515 Colonial Downs Pkwy New Kent, VA 23124 from 11:00am - 3:00pm every other Saturday, the next one is March 4th. If interested give me a ring and if I'm available we can meet up. You have my number?  They then switch it to Friday nights I think, I'd have to check the schedule. Cars from all over the east coast go to it. Be warned though, it is a parking lot with no shade and during the summer can be a scorcher. Lots of fun though and a good variety of cars and truckers.
