Cooling question
« on: August 01, 2023, 06:47:21 PM »
I have a aluminum radiator and wondering what coolant to use on 78 400.
Still a 50/50 mix?
Also will the air cleaner/shaker setup work on a Edelbrock carb?

Do you have an air cleaner at present to test? Need to check height but also linkage clearance. Any carb spacers? Stock intake or height?

If it was mine I would use "typical" green antifreeze.  The traditional green stuff is "inorganic acid technology."  I'm sure that some of the newer "all makes and models" antifreeze would be okay, but I don't really know.  Our cars have a copper brass heater core.

Any traditional green antifreeze that adheres to GM 1899M standards, as specified in your service and owner's manual. 50/50 mix of concentrate and distilled water.

Zerex Original Green is a good one a lot of folks use.

They sell it pre-mixed 50/50 as well. A six gallon case is available on Amazon for a pretty cheap price (around $80), which is plenty for our entire cooling system.

You can use the Prestone stuff in the yellow jug in a pinch since they sell it everywhere, but it's not the correct color or formulation to use as standalone coolant for our cars - that stuff is meant to be more of a universal coolant that will mix with any other kind for top-offs.

My loop is already super dirty. New big 3 row radiator from a Camaro, and whatever the cheapest antifreeze there is. Works for me haven’t seen any issues, never goes above 180 no matter the temp or load.
