Title: Decal removal
Post by: firethorn on September 03, 2021, 08:30:38 AM
Just purchased 02 limited edition t/a. want to remove decals. Removed many from other vehicles, but never 20 yr. old ones. Any advice?

Use a hair drier on low setting to get the decal soft.  Get an edge started then spray the underside of the decal with mineral spirits. Give it a few seconds to melt the adhesive and pull some more and repeat.   You can up the setting on the hair drier, but be careful not to blister the paint.

I would be extremely careful with a hair dryer, I tried that once (maybe my hair dryer wasn't on the lowest setting) my paint bubbled.

Mineral spirits can possibly dull the paint.  I would suggest using WD40 or equivalent.

We had our trucks lettered with vinyl graphics. Wanted to take the names off when we sold them. I used a hair dryer and finger nail, I think I used some lighter fluid for the glue residue. The stuff came off fairly easy but was a tedious job. They did leave a 'ghost outline' on the paint. I buffed and waxed and it was still there ever so faintly.
