Tires, Brakes & Suspension / Brake Help
« Last post by roadking77 on Today at 01:34:07 PM »
If anyone has a stock disc brake settup from 79, is it possible to post some pics of the caliper and in particular the line feeding into the caliper.

I am having a devil of a time getting my rear brakes hooked up. I bought calipers from Firebird Central and after talking with them found out they are for someone doing a conversion to disc brakes. I have hard lines installed which I thought were exact reproductions, I may have bought them from inline tube? The hard lines I have do not fit into the Caliper. The Caliper I have is made to accept a banjo bolt not a flare nut fitting that I have. I have tried getting parts to marry the two together but so far no luck. I found something close from JEGS, an inverted flare female fitting but the threading is off. I called and what I got from them is the closest thing they have.

Looking in my 1979 Service Supplement Manual I see nothing in reference to the 'feed' line other than a note that says
"if brass bolt and block were removed..."  Looking at Tom's thread about a parking brake I can see in the pic what I think is the brass block.

SO, I am looking for ideas, or if someone has an original pair of calipers that can be rebuilt that they want to part with.

If I remember right in the 79-81 columns there is a little arm that attaches the stalk to the turn signal switch. It screws in to the switch but only sits in a hole on the stalk side. It probably came out or wasn’t in the right position to start.

Unfortunately I need to replace mine as well. I had rebuilt/restored the column for my 79 a few years ago. I finally got around to putting it in a month or so ago and lo and behold the turn signal stalk moves freely  There is no stop or centre position for it. I dont know what happened to it as I am pretty sure it was ok when I did the initial work. You will probably get to yours before I do mine though.

For the door, try loosening just one hinge on cowl, top or bottom depending on other tweaks. With the bottom bolts loosened the door will close the gap at the rear, with the the top bolts loosened it with pull the door away at the top. Both will tilt the door and lift it, probably won't even see either move. If door lines up well without striker, then reposition striker so it centres in latch opening without lifting onto it.

Best direction to go…work on something else, then back to the doors. BTW, that red carpet really looks good.

I think you are correct about the inability to adjust; I need to check to make sure I didn't damage the cam during my new steering gear adventure...it's even possible I misaligned the hub a bit, which will suck because I'll have to re-straighten the steering wheel if I made that boneheaded mistake!

Right, I think any caliper one buys from a national auto parts store will have the traditional zerk fitting for bleeding, unless the manufacturer specs require a banjo type fitting...

This guy cut me off during the Good guys show in Dallas. The DMV really needs to get their act together.
