Title: Differential Factory Markings
Post by: roadking77 on June 09, 2021, 06:05:56 PM
Cleaning up my rear, it appeared to be original, lots of grease/oil, some undercoating overspray and lots of rust. BUT, there was a big blotch of white paint on the side of it that looked like a factory mark. Nothing put on in any order, almost looked like it was splashed on with a 3" brush.

Anyone have an idea if this IS a factory mark?

Kerry, no pic.

Quite likely, never seemed neat or terribly small. They range from large 4 on inspection cover, green dabs on magnet dimple, large G on top of centre casting, white squiggles like a looped cross on the sides, green and orange stripes under the leafspring mounts, all just random 'signatures' of different guys on production line or different checks of certain parts installed correctly.

Even inside the diff behind the gears often had a paint swipe, don't get caught adding the wrong colour inside the diff. Don't be that guy...

From what I was told, another factory built the rear ends at some point.  The big "G" stood for GM and was shipped to the plant.  "F" for Ford and so on.  I wanted to keep the original "G" on the differential so I painted it with grease before I painted the rear end.  When the paint was dried I wiped the grease off and cleaned it up with some simple green.

I have a dozen or more pics and DUH, none of the mark. I used this set up to degrease and power wash. If you look closely you can see the white on the yoke side of the diff. Best pic I found out of all of them.

Thanks for the replies. I am pretty sure what was on there was just a 'glob', no lettering or number.
