Door striker ‘length’ - for proper engagement?

I’ve seen strikers with spacers and without on GM cars. Does anyone know of a guide to make sure they engage the latch properly?
The surgeon general never said nuthin' 'bout smokin' the competition!

Im not sure there is a guide, I have not looked in my body manual to see if there is. When I align the doors I remove the strike, this allows me to close the door gently and 'sneak up' on the proper adjustment without having to actually latch the door every time. Once the door is right I then put the striker on. All of mine have a few shims that were there when I started.

The Fisher Body manuals only really mention that you insert clay block or similar, slightly close door to leave impression and adjust to suit. I guess you could do similar with a smear of grease and see where it touches. I also have the thin mylar disc shims, makes any adjustments easy and no chance of scratching paint. Be aware that the original GM striker used a specific tool prior to the Torx type becoming common and are not the same, GM version had square shoulder ends. Reproductions could use anything, even allen key on some.

Thank you. I noticed my torx doesn’t fit quite well but does remove it. I used an old chamois to take up some of the slack.

I’ll look into the grease if I can’t find some putty laying around.

Wallington, do you know if the seat belt bolts to the floor are GM specific as well and not really a torx? I have a devil of a time getting those things out.

Yes, same and same unless a more recent anchor bolt with actual size stamped on it to say otherwise.

The Fisher body manual also mentions to use the same J-23457 tool as the door striker bolt for seatbelt anchor bolts with internal drive.

A quick forum post from elsewhere to show the variations, although not an actual GM tool. I was simply doing a quick search to see if someone sold one.
