Looking for correct upper radiator hose
« on: May 19, 2021, 02:52:03 PM »
On my 1980 TA, I recently swapped out the original Pontiac 301 with a Pontiac 461. The 301 radiator hose has a slight bend or dog leg near the radiator to help clear the windshield washer reservoir. The attached hose, I purchased a hose from Classic Industries that more or less fits OK. If install the washer bottle the hose is sitting on top of it, making access to fill the reservoir difficult. The hose is resting right on top of the cap and it just doesn't look right. I have seen pictures of late 2nd gen Firebirds with a 400 CI engine where the upper hose has the same bend as my 301 hose, but don't know where to buy one. The hose diameter is larger on the 400 at the radiator end than the 301. Anybody else run into this issue? Any suggestions?

The upper hose not installed is what the 301 had.

You want a hose for a 1980 TA 4.9 liter.
I bought this one - https://www.summitracing.com/parts/cel-61107

I got the tip from this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYs6tPCGVHU

Thanks Gene, but that is the same as my original hose on my normally aspirated 301. it wont fit my Cold Case radiator that is the same size as 400 CI radiators on earlier Firebirds.

I am looking for a hose that has the larger diameter 1 1/2 -1 5/8" at the radiator and the thermostat housing ends. But still has the bend to clear the washer bottle.

You want a Gates 21183. 1.5" ID on both sides and molded. Parts computer application is '79 Trans Am with a 400. Same as the B-body cars for 1979-1981 with a 301.
Trans Am-less at the moment...

Sorry, guess I didn't read your post close enough. Good to see someone with the right answer.  :D
