Vari Speed Wiper Switch
« on: April 04, 2024, 05:33:08 AM »
I have a vari speed wiper switch on my tenth car. My question has anyone rebuilt one of these? If so how successful was it? On mine the switch itself is very stiff and almost stuck. I dont want to force it for fear of breaking. I have loaded it up from the front with electrical contact cleaner but it has not loosened anything. Not sure if pb blaster will damage the insides? These are not reproduced, I found a couple of decent ones on ebay but it would be cheaper to buy a pound or two of gold!!

No, I haven't.  I need one too. Those things are ridiculously expensive and I hear there are a couple different designs too.

I have a couple.  I tired to rebuild a standard switch - they simply come apart and are not designed to be serviced.

Thats what I was afraid of. I pulled mine out of the dash but did not unhook it yet. Looked pretty much like a sealed unit.  I was hoping that someone had taken one apart and back together successfully. Guess I will start looking.

Take a picture of your wiring and compare to what you find. And let me know if you find someone hoarding some...

Luke, I will let you know if I come up with anything. I was going to broaden my search through other gm cars of that era, Olds, Caddie, Buick. Corvette may have used one as well but I would imagine that part would be more expensive than one for a T/A, LOL.

Are you talking about the pulse wiper switch or the switch with one big "wash" or "push" button ?

I was talking about the pulse switch. I just assumed Kerry was too as that switch is tough to find

It's not sealed. Knobs must be removed carefully without breaking, metal legs of housing straighten and that's it. There are a couple of springs and tiny pieces inside of it, maybe something is broken so it doesn't work properly.

The shaft that the knob goes on on my formula is gone. I wonder if that is something I can make on a lathe. Or how is it attached to the potentiometer.?

I don't know if it's molded into plastic part or just pressed like the other end

Perfect, kinda what I was looking for. If soaking doesnt work I will give dissection a try. Mine is complete, but the knob will barely move side to side. I dont want to force it in fear of it breaking.
