LED gauge lights
« on: March 23, 2022, 06:11:24 PM »
Just finished buttoning up the job. Switched out all the stock bulbs with leds I picked up from Amazon. About $19 all in and I have some bulbs to spare. Looks way better than the stock bulbs, then again the ones I replaced were probably from 78. Did the speedo/tach/temp-oil gauge and hvac controls from underneath. Small hands and some creative/blind reaching did the trick. The fuel, volt and lighter bulbs I took out the front and replaced that way.

Do you have a link to the bulbs you used?  I have a blue LED in my HVAC spot and it is no where near as well lit as yours.

And these are the larger ones for the hvac, lighter and shifter.

And I just discovered, the led bulb does not work in the high beam indicator socket. I switched it back to the standard halogen and it works again. Something to keep in mind if you undertake the project.

I have speedhut gauges with blue backlighting that I am trying to match.  I need to get the HVAC and wiper/lights blue.

I appreciate the link as that was helpful, other than they have two blues to choose from.

The wiper switch lit up nicely if that's only from that clear prism piece. Mine doesn't use that, have to come up with something one day.

I agree the wiper switch lit up nice in the pics.

I'm gonna have to come up with some sort of bulb and housing for mine.  I have aftermarket gauges mounted in the stock bezel and no provision for the prism any more.

Maybe a single led diode behind the opening would do the trick? Wouldn’t even need to get too fancy housing it with how small they are.

Was thinking some sort of light box with some of the top missing, for build-up of any heat and to add a glow to the switch knob above it. The box could be tacked, even taped, to the rear of the dash fascia over the plastic insert and globe socket pressed in or similar during install each time. Just have to check brightness with rest of dash. But my dash needs redoing anyway so if it ever got that far it'd likely be forgotten completely or done differently.

Saw this post and ordered white ones like this.   Really makes for better gauges.   Thanks!

The coloured LEDs for gauge surrounds just make everything green, that's not how the original lighting worked on the faces.
