Is there something on the trim tag that matches up with the vin?
-
not enough to ID the car, just a few options like perhaps year, model, engine and where built.
Then other 2-3 VIN were stamped on firewall behind AC case/heater box. Original engine and trans have partials.
-
the body number on the cowl tag and the vin number should match on the phs documents or the build sheet if you find one
-
Good point. The number on my cowl tag is listed on the buildsheet but features nowhere in my PHS paperwork. Obviously the VIN does.
Vamp, Are you trying to check if car is original or matching perhaps? Or just worried that the cowl tag has nothing matching the VIN like you might expect it should?
-
The short answer is no. It's just not there at all.
-
This reminds me of a sticky we need, ha ha.

I'm looking at a 78 that I'm maybe 60% sure is a y82. The seller claims it is but all I have is the vin that is so Rusted I can barely read it and the trim tag. I was hoping the last few if the vin was on the trim tag but no number on the tag is anything close to what I can read of the vin.

The only stamped alt VIN is under the heater box on the firewall. You read it from the engine side. Not easy to get to.
There was originally a sticker on the drivers door.

Anyone speak rust? We think it's 2W87Z8L163810. I'd like to run a phs but not 100% sure I'm correct

Trim tag just because
-
trim tag decode = just because
st78 = 1978 model . 2fs87 = pontiac firebird coupe. L = built in van nuys plant . 198946 body number
tr19n = black vinyl interior . a51 = bucket seats .w19lw19u = black paint lower body and upper
04d = fourth week april build. b = black big 4. 3 = power windows . 244168 can't remember
big 4 is console, dash pad, rear parcel shelf, kick panels and something else i cant remember carpet
-
I know this is a dumb question but the body number in the vin and the body number on the trim tag are supposed to be two different numbers?
-
yes.
The VIN number is not there on the trim tag. It is not there. The sequence number is not there. The unique identifiable part is not there.

Carpet.
That's 5 areas, but GM said "4". Most cars back then didn't have a console, so I think that's the one they didn't count.

Phs confirmed. It is not a special edition. My search continues. It was a complete basket case anyway.

Oh well, on to the next one!
