Wow, didn't know it was a thing..

Today is a special day for Citizens Band enthusiasts. It's National CB Radio Day!

On October 2, 1978, President Jimmy Carter issued a statement proclaiming October 4 (10-4) as National CB Radio Day. He acknowledged the use of CB radio for emergency communications both on and off the road and noted that the use of radio enabled citizens to actively participate in the enhancement of public safety.

Carter said, "While CB is primarily for emergency use, the nonemergency channels bring enjoyment and companionship to millions of Americans" Carter said, "including my own family."

Carter's family was not the "first" First Family exposed to the Citizens Band craze of that era. First Lady Betty Ford was also reportedly an avid CB radio operator. Her CB "handle" was "First Mama".

In honor of National CB Radio Day (or "10-4" Day as it is also known), Buy Two Way Radios is giving away a FREE T-Shirt and CB Radio Quick Reference Card with the purchase of select Galaxy and Uniden CB radios! No promo code needed. Your free items will automatically be shipped with your order.

The CB Radio Day promotion is valid from October 4 through midnight October 7. If you are looking for a new CB radio, antenna, hand microphone or other accessory, now may be a great time to pick one up!

For the complete presidential statement, read Jimmy Carter: 10-4 Day Statement by the President, October 2, 1978. Online by Gerhard Peters and John T. Woolley, The American Presidency Project.

That an interesting little tidbit Rich! I am-sure Smokey & the Bandit movie helped a lot with the promotion and popularity of CB’s. While I was never very talkative, listening in on conversations was entertaining and the truckers were really diligent on pointing out speed traps on the highways. Driving across country at the 55 MPH national speed limit was painfully slow. Funny because I seem to recall it was Jimmy Carter who pushed it through.

My dad was big into CB's and I have fond memories of those days sitting with my dad and chatting with people. I have one for my car and have used it on trips. I plan to get installed again soon.

My grand ma, yes you read that right, was big into the CB craze.  I also remeber sitting there listening and talking on the radio.  Early texting I guess lol.  I had one again in 2014 in a work truck and have considered installing on in the TA.  Not sure how effective it would be since waze and other apps are pretty good at locating traps and such.

I have a CB in my 77. I enjoy listening to the conversations on I going down the highway, and communicating with truckers.

I remember as a kid driving up to the UP of Michiga, my dad always stuck his Cobra CB between the Sean and center console for the trip up. I’ve considered adding one to the T/A but I have a console mounted 8 track and I’m afraid mounting anywhere else would kind of clutter things up. Plus the few times I’ve listened in the area most of the conversation is nearly unintelligible. And lastly, I’m not sure how I feel about a magnetic mount on my deck lid paint. Sorry, buzzkill, I know lol

I grew up in that era and remember them well. I am in a rural area and everyone had a CB. No real place to put one in the ta without damage or clutter as mentioned but I have considered adding an antennae just for the looks. We would go to Fla every winter for an extended vacation. One year in the mid 70's my parents' best friends followed us down. I remember Dad and Mose (his buddies name) putting the CB's in their family cars. They yacked at each other all the way down 95. Lots of fun memories.
