Bell Housing for T10 4 speed
« on: June 12, 2023, 06:29:10 AM »
I have a T10 4 speed for my 79, 400. No idea what bell housing I need. I have 2 and hope that one of them is correct.

Your first two pictures, the bell without the bolts in it, is the BOP. Thinking the other is Chevy. The other piece is an inspection cover.

I agree with Brian. For sure the third photo looks like a Chevy bolt pattern.

Thanks, thats what I had guessed from those I have seen. The second one (with the bolts) looked kinda funny to me.

IS THE INSPECTION COVER CORRECT?

Mine is bare aluminum. Not positive on the inspection cover. It looks to be from what I’ve seen but I’m missing mine.

Once again, I agree with Brian. Through the years I have worked on a lot of GM cars and have never seen a painted bell housing, but have seen overspray of engine paint on some near the top of the bell housing.

If the inspection cover bolts to the bell housing, then you have the correct one. Should be an opening for the starter on the driver's side.

Is the inspection cover plastic or a metal? I have a heap of plastic ones, but no metal ones. Sounds like I need to get one for my '79 400

The inspection cover is metal with a black finish.

Thank You. Yes the insp cover I have is metal. Glad its supposed to be black, thats how I refinished it  It was black but a bit crusty so I just sanded it down and redid it. Got the bell housing degreased, power washed and polished up. Was going to paint it an aluminum colour as I dont like the swirls the polisher left behind. From what I can tell it looks like it was about half rough cast to begin with. I am going to try and dull it down a bit with some scotchbright first. I hate to paint a surface that doesnt need painting.

If you have a cheap siphon media blaster, you could use some glass beads and lightly blast it. It basically returns it to factory look.
