Title: Old Threads?
Post by: chief poncho on March 08, 2021, 03:16:00 PM
I know the question has been raised a few times, but does it look like all of the old posts are lost forever or will they be able to be resurrected at a later date?

IIRC Mike said they'd been stored, so with a little luck they'll be revived when the new forum software is up & running.

Based on the main thread on the topic, we can assume they are gone forever. I got the impression based on what we know that there was no backup beyond what was provided by the hosting company and those are toast. I assume the mysql tables got corrupted in some way and are unreadable and not restorable. Not much else we can do if there are no backups.

 :(

It would be nice to have a definitive yes or no.  It would be a an incredible amount of lost knowledge if that is the case.  I was going to restart my build thread, but wanted to wait to see if the old one got restored before spending hours recreating it.

MrBandit's sticky thread in the lobby says that the data backups he had are unusable.  He does say that he has some content but he'll need to write a custom script to move it into the tables. Unfortunately he didn't give a timeframe for that but that sounds to me like there is a chance for some old threads to be re-populated.

The software, and hardware I assume, has been updated. The forum is now running on the latest version of SMF 2.0.18 (we were on 2.0.9).

I caught that from Mike's post.  Unfortunately, I'm wrapping up my build and I'm struggling to find information for the little details elsewhere.  This place is/was such a valuable resource.  The thought of all of the information that was here in the various threads being gone is just sad.  While I love the forum format for exchanging information and certainly love it a lot more than Facebook as it's a lot easier to find information and search for it, archiving really helpful tech threads in another format would have been great.  Even things like the Project threads were an incredible source of vital information, and losing them is such a loss.

I find myself now wandering in the internet wilderness to find simple answers like where the floor dimmer switch needs to be located and simple tips on installing my carpet as well as the subtle differences between a 70-71 tach and later 8k RPM tachs.  Even my own project thread has a lot of information I found myself going back to reference when reassembling, but now it's gone....possibly forever.  :(

Im in the same boat. My build was completely reliant on this knowledge base.  The timing couldn't have been worse, I have a dozen loose ends. Totally sidelined. LOL

Mike's post indicated that there were backups for some threads, but it was going to take time to fix. I can only imagine that this would take a lot of time sorting through coding and whatnot. I'd hang tight and in the meantime create new content by asking questions. Most of the original users are still here and active. If there is something specific you want to know, start a thread and you'll get answers.

It sucks seeing this place turned into a barren wasteland.

I'll miss the build threads the most. There was a lot of cool stuff going on in that section.

And if you have time, go back and do some reposts. This will get built back up with time. Too good of a community not to!

Some of the Sponsors that no longer appear current and haven't contributed for a long time probably can be reminded or moved on. Good to see that punk obsessed with his own name now gone.
